6 Trends Affecting Local Businesses in 2015

Want to better your ROI in rest of 2015? Do you have a local business selling products you feel the squeeze from big box competitors or if you're a local service provider such as roofer, HVAC or contractor or if your a licensed professional (doctor, dentist, cosmetic surgeon, attorney, etc.)  you feel the squeeze from the "we'll beat any advertised price" blaring across radio or other type of ads. 
What to do? It seems as if this is squeezing your bottom-line thinner and thinner. There is hope as a recent study we participated revealed for local businesses who focus on quality and service, and not merely price!
IMEEA, a national marketing trade association and Local Leads HQ, a leader in business consulting, online and video marketing, conducted a survey of 3,023 consumers and their behavior and preferences related to local service businesses.The studied focused on how consumers locate and contact local businesses, and what they would most like from them. Part of the research asked questions where improvements could be made to better serve the consumer in their online search experience and in dealing with the local business once they become its client, patient or customer.
The 6 major trends your local business should focus on and implement to better your its ROI, branding and repeat business identified are...
1.)   Higher Usage of Local Business Increase. 82% of consumers currently frequent local businesses, and almost half (48.2%) plan to increase their patronage of local small business interaction (within a 5-10 mile) radius. Less than 1% of survey respondents say they will decrease their use of local businesses in their neighborhood over the next 12 months.
 2.)  Ease of Online Connection. Consumers want more ways to connect online with local businesses. They want an option or feature that allows them to click a button to call them, an online chat feature. Consumers also identified website improvements as the change they are most interested in seeing from local businesses over the next year. To be able to navigate through a website without so much confusion and drop down menus so many sites have now a days. The old KISS formula -- Keep It Simple Silly!
 3.  Communication. When asked about a variety of different types of communication such as service/appointment reminders and advice/helpful tips, consumers saw a shortfall between what they are currently getting from local businesses and what they want in order to better improve services. Things such as direct mail newsletters, email notifications, phone calls, and texts seem to be popular for connecting and informing them of changes that may impact them personally. 
4.   Greater Importance of Online reviewsare expected as a way to filter out the good from the bad. Though not a science a three-quarters of consumers say that having reviews gives them more information and gives a business a competitive advantage (36%). However, less than 1 in 10 consumers (7%) have been asked to write a review of a local business even though the vast majority (89%) are willing to do so if they had a positive experience and were asked to do so by a local business.
5. Price Shopping? Very surprisingly consumers pointed out that local businesses should focus and compete on service and quality and not on price. Consumers believe their local businesses outperform national chains in term of service delivery by a mile. Over 90% feel local businesses beat national brand (box-stores) on personalization of service and attention. Though most consumers agree (78%) national box chains offer more competitive prices, nearly three-quarters (71%) are willing to pay more to a local business for better quality, one-to-one attention and higher customized services.
6. A strategic and comprehensive online presence. Local service and brick-and mortar businesses need to have an online strategy. Why? The vast majority of consumers (75%) surveyed today use the internet (smart phones, tablets and home computers) to find or research a business. In addition to search engines and websites, survey respondents are using review sites, YouTube, review videos, and social media to identify those local businesses they most likely want to work with, contact and contract. Simply slapping together a website and maybe a Facebook page with a few "likes" from your manager or yourself is NOT a strategy. In the ever changing landscape of marketing media and the frantic pace at which it technology changes a strategy that correctly reach a consumer is what is important.
